Seagrass Information for Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data

- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This data represent a compilation of seagrass information for areas along the Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas coasts from various source agencies. Seagrass areas were mapped from aerial photography taken between 1987 to 1999. The original source data were not all classified in the same manner, but the information from each of these sources was maintained in the final results.
- Purpose:
-
This coverage was developed as part of the Gulf of Mexico Ecosystem Pilot Project. This pilot project was designed to improve identification and remote access to habitat data for fishery managers and researchers, and to provide habitat mapping capabilities within the Gulf of Mexico region. To reach this goal, a consortium built on shared expertise and resources from within National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS), and state participants has focused on several tasks, including developing an inventory and clearinghouse for existing habitat-related data and information, continuing developing a searchable FGDC compliant habitat metadata catalog, developing remote internet gateways to life history, habitat, and ecological data sets, and producing geographic information system (GIS) products for habitat mapping.

From the source metadata for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida seagrasses: Interpreted photos were quality checked by two photo interpreters for attribute classification. Field verification was performed for areas where attribute classification was questionable; local personnel with state and federal agencies assisted in field identification. The mylar-based 1:24,000 maps were checked by cartographic personnel for line and labelworks. The attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes cannot be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on screen. In addition, the attributes are compared against a master set of valid attributes. From the source metadata for southwest Florida seagrasses: An accuracy assessment was performed on the data to compare in-field classifications to photointerpreted map classification. Sixty random sample points of polygons coded as seagrass were generated. The sites were located in the field with a Global Positioning System (GPS). Fifty-five of the sites were accessible in the field. Accuracy has been estimated to be 96%, 53 of the 55 sample points were confirmed as accurately classified. This accuracy was determined during August - September 2000.
From the source metadata for Texas seagrasses: The categorical accuracy for the delineation from the aerial photography is estimated at 90% according to recognized procedures.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
From source metadata for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida seagrasses: ARC/INFO software is used to create and maintain topological relationships between features. There are no duplicate features, but coincident lines are maintained between data layers where appropriate. Polygonal features begin and end at the same point, contain no overshoots or undershoots, and contain a single label. Linear features are continuous where appropriate, i.e., dangling arcs are removed if they are not required. From source metadata for southwest Florida seagrasses: The final product was checked against the source material. The Mapping and GIS section of the Southwest Florida Water Management District corrected any errors found. From source metadata for Texas seagrasses: Refer to Compilation of a Digital Data Layer Composed of Wetland Habitats and Coastal Land Cover Data, Final Report to Natural Resources Inventory Program, Appendix III: Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Land Cover Descriptions and Data Dictionary, Section 4.0.

From source metadata for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida seagrasses: The horizontal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy check plots to the source materials, and verifying the location of the data on-screen relative to other data layers in the same geographic area. From source metadata for southwest Florida seagrasses: A visual inspection of the linework along with shoreline linework, derived from 1:12,000 United States Geological Survey Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs), overlaid onto aerotriangulated photography has estimated accuracy to be within +/- 10 meters. This accuracy was determined December 1999 to September 2000. Horizontal accuracy of Texas seagrasses is unknown.

Cartographic process: Planning for the flight mission was prepared according to shoreline distance. After acquiring the aerial photography, stereo pairs were created and packaged according to 1:24,000 topographic maps; these maps also served as base maps for cartographic transformation work. The photos were interpreted using a Bausch Lomb stereoscope at 10X magnification. Cartographic work was performed using a Zoom Transfer Scope, and magnification varied according to source material scale. This is in reference to seagrass classification for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida.

Digitizing Process: Mylar overlays were manually digitized using an Altek Datatab digitizer to capture the data at a resolution of at least 0.001 inches. Four control points corresponding to the four corners of the quadrangle were used for registration during data collection. Cover type features continuing onto adjacent quadrangles were adjusted to intersect the quad boundary at a common, coincident node. Attributes were assigned as the data were digitized, or in an editing session after the digitizing was completed. This is in reference to seagrass classification for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida.

Seagrass data were downloaded in 7.5 minute quads for Alabama, Mississippi, and northwest Florida. The data were imported into ArcView GIS, reprojected into a geographic coordinate system and merged into a single coverage. Part of the data within the quad coverage for Anclote Keys Florida were cropped to elimate an area of overlap with an adjacent dataset. Several attribute fields were added to the data to include descriptive information about the attribute codes.

A photointerpretation key was developed, using signatures identified in the natural color photography, to aid in the photointerpretation process. The classifications were defined by eight modified categories from the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) Florida Land Use, Cover and Forms Classification System (FLUCCS). Pre and post-interpretation field reviews were conducted to obtain proper seagrass photo signatures. The shoreline data and 1996 seagrass data, provided by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), was translated to Microstations's design file format (.dgn) for use as a collateral data source in the photointerpretation process. The 1999 aerial photography was aerotriangulated utilizing the United States Geological Survey's Global Positioning System-derived control points and supplemental ground control points (GCP) collected from the digital orthophoto quarter quadrangles (DOQQs). Supplemental GCPs were collected using photo identifiable points established on the DOQQs and the natural color aerial photography. Coordinate information was obtained from the DOQQs using ArcView software. Aerotriangulation was performed with PatB aerotriangulation software. Seagrass beds and related features were stereoscopically photointerpreted from the 1:24,000 natural color aerial photography using stereo models set on the analytical stereoplotter. The FDOT modified FLUCCS system was used to code features within study area boundaries. The minimum mapping unit for all features was 0.5 acres. Process software and version: Zeiss P# analytical steroplotter, Sun UltraSparc Unix. This is in reference to seagrass classification for southwest Florida only.

Digitizing was completed using Microstation with built in Cadmap functions. The 1996 seagrass data was implemented as collateral information during the compilation process. The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) shoreline data was incorporated into the 1999 seagrass data files and modified, where necessary, to reflect changes that have occurred in the 1999 natural color photography. Most changes were natural features, mainly extent of mangroves and mangrove islands, that had changed substantially or were no longer visible on the 1999 photography. Man-made alterations, such as canals, were added if the alterations affected seagrass beds or tidal flats that may be pertinent to the establishment of new seagrass beds. Process software and version: Sun UltraSparc Unix, ArcINFO 7.2. This is in reference to seagrass classification for southwest Florida only.

Bays and Estuaries; All permanently flooded, open water, non-vegetated areas within the study area to the consistency of brackish water. The photosignature for 5400 is usually a smooth, bluish-green color, but can sometimes appear dark blue depending on water depth and turbidity levels. It can usually be found on the deeper edges of seagrass beds and in residential canals. Sometimes a 5400 polygon will be elongated and linear with straight edges, denoting a man-made channel dredged through a shallow water area (i.e. Intracoastal Waterway).

Marine (Gulf of Mexico); Includes only the marine open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Marine was separated from Bays and Estuaries by dividing lines extending across the inlets which join the Gulf of Mexico with Clearwater Harbor. The photosignature for 5700 is similar to 5400, except that it is usually more blue than green because of the increased water depth and clarity. 5700 can be found along the western edge of the barrier islands and outside all passes.

- Enumerated_Domain_Value: 6510
- Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
-
Tidal flats; Non-vegetated areas of sand or mud which are exposed at least once during the year or are capable of supporting seagrass populations for that segment of the bay (i.e. approximately six feet depth). This category is composed of that portion of the shore environment protected from wave action, as in the case of estuaries, comprised mostly of muds transported by tidal channels. An important characteristic of the tidal flat environment is its alternating tidal cycle of submergence and exposure to the atmosphere. The photosignature for 6510 is very smooth and obviously non-vegetated. The signature can be different colors depending on water dept and turbidity levels. It can appear white (very shallow, sandy areas), light green (deeper, sandy areas), gray (murky water) or even light brown in some tannin-stained areas. 6510 is usually found on the shallower edges of seagrass beds, either along the shoreline or on the crest of a barrier-type seagrass bed.

Beaches other than swimming; Isolated strands of open (non-vegetated) sand, not typically accessible (on islands and fringes). The photosignature for 7100 is usually a smooth, bright white or tan color and can be found along mangrove and spoil islands throughout the work area. These areas can be describe as naturally occurring sandy beaches or beaches formed by spoil deposition, both of which are not often used for recreational purposes.

- Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
-
Patchy seagrass; This category appears as singular, isolated patches of seagrass or extensive areas of patch strands mixed with open bottom. Typically these areas appear as round clumps, or as elongated strands mixed with sand. The photosignature for 9113 usually has a rough texture when viewed through a stereoscope, and is bluish-gray to almost black depending on water depth and turbidity. 9113 can be found on the deeper and shallower edges of continuous seagrass beds or can be large and expansive and cover the entire bed.

- Enumerated_Domain:
-
- Enumerated_Domain_Value: 9116
- Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
-
Continuous seagrass; These areas exhibit a continuous and uniform signature. Small, (less than one-quarter acre) sandy bottom features may be interspersed within the bed, but these areas are not dominant. Areas that appear as continuous beds of seagrass communities, regardless of species composition, will be mapped. The photosignature for 9116 is more smooth than that of 9113 but still has some texture. It also can be bluish-gray to almost black, but has only a few areas of open bottom showing through to interrupt the continuous signature. 9116 usually can be found in the center of large, healthy seagrass beds and sometimes runs parallel to the shoreline for hundreds of meters.
